The MGIB program will provide up to 3 years/36 months of education benefits. This benefit may be used for a higher education degree, certificate program, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Under certain circumstances remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved as well. In most cases the benefit is payable for up to10 years following release from active duty. There is a new program for MGIB recipients’ which offer more benefits to veterans’ with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001. It is also available to those individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days that also meet the guidelines above. You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The Post-9/11 GI Bill became effective for training on or after August 1, 2009. |

Chapter 30 (Active Duty) The Montgomery GI Bill will provide you with 36 months of education benefits. It may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Certain programs such as remedial training and refresher courses are approved on a case by case basis. In most cases this benefit is payable for 10 years following release from active duty. For more info: MGIB-AD Chapter 33 The Post 911 GI Bill, also know as Chapter 33 is for individuals who have served a minimum of 90 days after September 11, 2001, or discharged with a connected disability after 30 days. This program became effective for training on or after the August 1, 2009. Listed below are some benefits received from Chapter 33:
** If you are taking online classes or are still on active duty you will not receive the BAH. For more info: Post 911 GI Bill Chapter 1606 (Selected Reserve) If you are a member of the Selected Reserve this chapter could be available to you. These components could be the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, the Army National Guard, and the Air National Guard. This benefit can be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Certain programs such as remedial training and refresher courses are approved on a case by case basis. For more info: MGIB-SR Chapter 1607 This benefit is for Reserve component individuals that have been called up for active duty in response to a war or national emergency as declared by the President or Congress. The benefit ensures that these individuals activated for a minimum of 90 days after September 11, 2001 will be eligible for education benefits or increase their existing benefits. For more info: REAP Chapter 35 This benefit is for the spouse or children of a veteran who is totally disabled, or dies from active duty. The death can either be direct or as a result aggravated by active duty. The benefit is also extended to dependents of those veterans’ that are currently being held as a POW, or against their will by a foreign government. The benefit allows for up to 45 months of education benefits to the spouse or child of the veteran. For more info: Chapter 35 Dependents Chapter 32 This chapter is commonly known as VEAP. To be eligible for this benefit you must have entered active duty between January 1, 1977 and June 30, 1985. During that period you would of have had to elect to make contributions from your military pay to participate in this program. These contributions are matched on a $2 for $1 basis by the Government.
